Introduction to Honors College

 

I. College History

 

 In 1997, this university was renamed National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The university gradually reorganized itself into five colleges: College of Engineering , College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, School of Management , College of Design and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; by the time the Graduate Institute of Engineering belonged to the College of Engineering . Further on, in year 2006 the university held an undergraduate program ‘University General Class for Bachelor’. It offers challenges and opportunities to academically talented students from general high schools. It is also a community for students with high achievement or exceptional skill from vocational high schools. These students are enrolled in Jing-Ying classes. In the following year, entry to Fan Xin classes for excellent students from vocational high schools and general high schools at most areas in were included. Relevant affairs of the department were originally undertaken by the Office of Academic Affairs.

        In March, 2008 ‘ Honors College ’ was approved by the Ministry of Education. In the meantime the Graduate Institute of Engineering and the University General Class for Bachelor were subsumed to the Honors College . In August, 2008 ‘Jing Cheng Department’ was established to transact the University General Class for Bachelor affairs.

 

II. Honors College Now

 

Presently, the Graduate Institute of Engineering holds 4 professional groups recruiting master and doctoral students; as well as an academic program for doctoral students. They are: Applied and Theoretical Chemistry Group, Medical Engineering Group, Science Education and Learning Group, Science Education and e-Learning Group, Cognitive Psychology Group and Program of Materials Science and Technology. Currently, the Graduate Institute of Engineering has 27 master students and 44 doctoral students. The ‘Jing Cheng Department’ has 2 junior classes, 5 sophomore classes and 5 freshmen classes; a total of 534 students.
